What is chat? The development of technology enables fast and efficient communication, not only for direct contact but also online. Chat can be that very form of internet-based contact. A chat can involve either two people, in which case it is private, or more people—then it is called public. Furthermore, so-called emoticons are used to express the emotions accompanying the sent content, with the intention of aiding the communication of feelings that might be missed in text-based communication. And what is it most often used for? There are many applications, which means the popularity of this form of communication is constantly growing.
By chat, we mainly mean a website service, or more often today, an application that enables the quick exchange of text messages between its users. Nowadays, this form of communication enjoys widespread interest among individual users and also allows for professional marketing activities. Currently, chats often function on the websites of companies and stores. They can be used to contact a customer who, thanks to their existence, also gains the chance to establish a dialogue with a person possessing specialized knowledge about the offered product or service. To use chat, internet access is necessary. Today, one can chat online not only via a computer but also through mobile devices, such as smartphones. Moreover, many chats allow for the creation of groups where several, a dozen, or even dozens of users can participate in the conversation.
Most words related to the IT industry originate from the English language. They are borrowed from it, with some undergoing "Polonization," while others do not. The concept of chat is a good example of this phenomenon. Despite the fact that its original name is spelled with "ch," it is pronounced with the "cz" sound in Polish. For this reason, the spelling in the Polish language was modified. This was presumably intended to simplify the pronunciation and eliminate any doubts about how the word mentioned above should be articulated. So, how should you write it in Polish: czat or chat? The good news is that both versions are still used.
